Judges at the Energy Innovation Awards have selected the company’s idea for energy storage as a finalist, in the annual competition staged by the East of England Energy Group. In response to Npower's price rise announced recently, head of services research at Which? Jenni Conti says that this latest increase is yet more proof that consumers need to shop around for the best energy deals. The storage unit will be constructed in Hemsby, Norfolk, and connected to the electricity network between Ormesby and Martham in Norfolk. A typical dual fuel customer on a standard tariff consumes 3,300 Kilowatt hours a year of electricity and 20,500 Kilowatt hours of gas a year. The project will use light technology developed by engineering company ABB, to convert energy from the electricity network into a form in which it can be saved in high performance batteries. These batteries can be charged and discharged many times over and kept in reserve for times of need, such as when a fault occurs on the network. "This follows the massive rises announced recently by British Gas and Powergen, so now Npower customers will be paying on average £70 more for gas and £43 pounds more for electricity following this price rise. “This idea will make a difference, because it will allow more renewable generation connections to existing electricity networks, and it will also demonstrate the value of energy storage.”
