The ... Read More The price increase is driven by three factors. First, the wholesale price of energy has doubled over the last year. Second, the distribution costs of transporting and metering energy from power stations and gas fields to homes and businesses has also risen. This increase is about £4 pa for an electricity customer and around £32 pa for a gas customer. Finally, the costs of meeting our environmental obligations have also risen for renewables, emissions trading and energy efficiency. The doubling of the energy which we buy on the wholesale markets has risen strongly since our price decrease in June 2007. Energy prices have risen by 90% for gas and 117% for electricity since February last year. Secondly, the increase in the distribution costs of transporting and metering energy have also risen. Finally, there have been significant cost increases from meeting our environmental obligations including a major expansion of the Government’s energy efficiency scheme which we fully support. EDF Energy is alone in the industry in making this available to prepayment customers. There is no cancellation fee or penalty should the customer want to come off this product at a later date.
